Get Involved

At Lawrence Batley Theatre, we believe theatre is for everyone. We offer a range of opportunities for you to get involved in. Whatever your age, experience, or interests.

Whether you're a young person stepping into a rehearsal room for the first time, an adult looking to try something new, or a professional artist shaping your next project, we’re here to support and celebrate your journey.

From our popular youth theatre groups to workshops, school partnerships and work experience placements, we help young people grow in confidence, learn new skills, and find their creative voice.

A home for our creative young people.

  • A group of children sit in blue theatre seats, engaged in an activity. A young girl in the foreground, wearing a pink shirt, excitedly raises her hand. Other children, some also raising their hands, are seated around her, looking towards the front. In the background, a smiling adult male, possibly a teacher or facilitator, watches. The theatre has blue seats and an orange and blue interior design.

We work closely with local schools to bring inspiring arts experiences into classrooms and welcome students into our building.

Our Artists in Development programme is designed to nurture and empower local artists and companies, providing them with the space, time and support they need to develop brave and exciting new ideas.

The artist development programme packages up the space, time, and expertise we can offer emerging artists and companies. There is no outcome required from the artist/company. The programme is designed to give space to those who have a brand-new idea, to those who need development time, or to those who are almost ready for an audience.

Our Artist in Development will receive:

  • 1-to-2-week residency in our Cellar Theatre or Attic Theatre space for free.
  • Mentoring from our team: this can be in the form of support with funding applications, dramaturgy, community engagement support, marketing advice, movement direction or technical assistance.
  • Opportunity to present a sharing performance at the end of the residency to an invited audience (if appropriate).

On being selected as an Artist in Development you’ll have a meeting with our Head of Creative Programme about your project and will set a timeline for your time as an Artist in Development at Lawrence Batley Theatre.

Kirklees Youth Theatre member

"I love going to the theatre but sometimes tickets can be expensive. The Under 30s scheme has given me the chance to see so many amazing shows that I might not have got the chance to see otherwise"
