A young girl with light skin, wearing pink glasses and a light pink t-shirt, sits in a theatre with blue seats. She is looking up with an excited expression, her mouth open and her hand raised in a gesture. Behind her, a young boy with curly hair and darker skin sits in a similar blue seat, rubbing one of his eyes with his finger. The background is slightly blurred, showing additional rows of blue theatre seats.

While our stages may be a little quieter during the summer, our building comes to life in a whole new way when school’s out!

Creative Fun for Young People in Kirklees

Taking place during the school summer holidays, our Summer Sessions are one-day drama workshops packed with summer fun and hands-on creative experiences. Perfect for families looking for kids’ days out or a local holiday camp, this is a brilliant way for children aged 6–17 to spend the day doing something a little different.

Young people as part of Summer Sessions.

Based on your doorstep in Huddersfield and running Tue 29, Wed 30 & Thu 31 July, our sessions offer a rare chance to see what really goes on behind the scenes at our theatre. From technical tricks to theatrical tips, young people are guided by our friendly team in an experience that’s as exciting as it is inspiring.

Through a mix of creative play, drama games and rehearsal time, participants will build confidence, meet new friends, and learn how theatre comes together on stage and off. Whether your child is completely new to drama or already a budding star, Summer Sessions are inclusive, welcoming and designed for all experience levels. No previous performance experience required!

Our Summer Sessions are ideal for anyone looking for acting for kids, kids classes, or summer family activities with a creative twist in Huddersfield.

With support from our Young Company tutors and technical team, the day ends in a short youth performance for family and friends that brings everything the young people have learned to life.

New for 2025: A National Theatre Connections Experience (Ages 12–17)

For the first time, we’re offering a special Summer Sessions for older participants aged 12–17, in collaboration with the National Theatre. This unique opportunity supports the development of a brand-new script that will be performed as part of NT Connections in 2027 – a nationwide youth theatre festival celebrating young performers across the UK.

Participants will explore the play's themes with a professional creative team, gaining a deeper understanding of how stories are shaped for the stage. They’ll work with Nicola Baldwin, an award-winning writer and director whose work spans TV, theatre, film, and radio. Nicola also brings a wealth of experience working with youth theatres at Sheffield Theatres and Leeds Playhouse.

This is a rare opportunity for young people to contribute to a developing piece of professional work while learning from top industry talent.
