We've been working closely with our Autumn/Winter 2025 Artist in Development Matthew J Tweedle.
What does it take to turn a personal story into powerful theatre? Over the past few months, we’ve been working with Artist in Development Matthew J Tweedle to support exactly that—offering time, space, and guidance as he brings his debut show to life.
So, what is an Artist in Development?
Our Artist in Development scheme is all about giving artists the time, space, and support they need to really dig into their work. That might mean studio space to experiment, mentorship and advice, help navigating funding, or support connecting with audiences and communities.
At its heart, it’s about backing bold, brilliant ideas and supporting artists at key moments in their journey—right here in West Yorkshire.
Meet Matthew J Tweedle
Matthew is a theatre maker and writer-performer who recently graduated from the University of Huddersfield with a first-class degree in Drama. His work blends the personal with the playful, often combining autobiographical storytelling with wider ideas and information to create something both thoughtful and entertaining.
What is D is for Dyslexia?
Matthew’s debut project, D is for Dyslexia, is a one-man show exploring his personal experiences of dyslexia and how being neurodivergent has shaped his expectations of life.
The piece is lively, honest, and full of character—featuring conversations with himself that are by turns funny, reflective, and deeply relatable. Audiences have called it “an absolute must-see,” praising its mix of humour and emotion, as well as its ability to challenge common myths around dyslexia.
How we’ve been working together (and why it matters)
Matthew has been using his time with us to develop both his practice and D is for Dyslexia. Having dedicated space at the theatre has been a game changer, giving him the freedom to work in his own way—recording, reviewing, and refining his performance again and again until it feels just right.
Alongside this, he’s been getting stuck into an Arts Council grant application, with guidance and support helping to demystify what can be a pretty complex process for first-time applicants.
Our Head of Creative Programme, Olivia, and Head of Participation, Rebecca, have also been working closely with Matthew—supporting him as he navigates the early stages of his career, builds connections, and finds his place within the Northern theatre network.
Why this kind of support matters
Support like this can make all the difference. It gives artists the chance to take risks, develop their voice, and bring new ideas to life.
At Lawrence Batley Theatre, this work is only possible thanks to the generosity of people who believe in investing in local artists and new work. Because when you support artists like Matthew, you’re not just supporting one person—you’re helping shape the cultural life of Huddersfield.
You’re helping bring new stories to the stage, creating opportunities for freelance artists and technicians, and building a creative, connected community.
If that sounds like something you’d like to be part of, we’d love your support. Every donation helps us keep championing artists, telling new stories, and making sure the next generation has what they need to thrive.
