Lockdown radio plays from our Young Company
During lockdown, our Young Company explored how they could still be creative together by trying new performance styles. Over five weeks they engaged with the Lawrence Batley Theatre through online creative sessions and pre-recorded tutorials working towards the creation of their very own radio play exploring the theme of ‘connection’.
Our Creative Associate, Olivia Race, who led on the digital project said -“The digital project was great in allowing us to continue to work creatively with our Young Company. Over a five-week period we did different creative writing activities whilst developing characters and wrote the radio plays as an ensemble, enabling us to stay connected during lockdown.”
Liz, aged 9, who took part in the project said -“I loved how you could be really creative and, the weekly videos were really helpful and you could do all the activities by yourself” – and Lucas, aged 16, enjoyed the new creative tasks the project offered each week and said – ”Recording lines for a radio play was a fun new experience.”
The Young Company wrote and performed the radio plays themselves, and you can listen to the fantastic results below…
Then and Now
Our younger Young Company group created a radio played called ‘Then and Now.’ The play imagines the world in 2021, before everyone discovers a time capsule from the year 2020. We hear about life in 2020 from the perspective of various different characters.
A New Way of Living
Our older Young Company group created a radio played called ‘A New Way of Living.’ The play gives an insight into the life of 12 different characters during lockdown, highlighting how they’re all connected in some way, and what they hope to come from the future.
