Supported by SITA trust

In Summer 2012, the LBT embarked on the first stage of a long awaited and exciting replacement and improvement project. After receiving a £60k funding boost from the SITA Trust, the LBT began Phase 1 of replacing the lighting system in the main house auditorium.

The first phase funded by the SITA Trust and supported by Kirklees Council’s Physical Resources and Procurement Department, with special help from Matthew Seed, Asset Manager, who has worked closely with the LBT to win the funds, focused on replacement the stage lighting dimmer system. The dimmer system provides power to and controls all the lighting on stage for the various performances that take place at the LBT each year. The old system was failing and the LBT has experienced a reduction in power and capability. The replacement involved removal of the old original dimmer system, the installation of new power and the full rewiring and reconnecting of all the lighting circuits. The LBT is proud to be one of the first theatres in the country to have the newly released state of the art digital ETC Sensor 3 dimmers, which are more energy efficient and improve overall production values for all performances on the LBT’s main stage and result in a better stage lighting companies and audiences.

Between April 11 and March 12 the LBT welcomed over 61,000 people to 345 performances. With the new dimmers the LBT will continue to programme inspiring performances from the UK’s leading companies as well as from leading amateur companies from across the district.

Karen O’Neill, General Manager at the LBT says: “The LBT is an incredible venue with big plans for the future. This funding will help us to continue to bring the best in local, national and international live performance to the people of Kirklees.  We are excited about the opportunity to move forward and make audience experiences even better with this new equipment.”

Jools Granville SITA Trust said ”We’re delighted to be involved with this project that will make such a huge difference at the Lawrence Batley Theatre. Thousands of people enjoy this fantastic arts venue each year and we hope that they notice the real difference that this project will make.”

Thank you BIFFA...

BiffaIn Summer 2013, the LBT embarked on the second phase of the improvement project of the dimmer system, focusing on the lighting in the auditorium or the 'House Lights' as they're commonly known.

Having been awarded BIFFA AWARD funding with backing from The Friends of Lawrence Batley Theatre, the second and final phase has now been completed and the dimmers are now in use.

The LBT’s original dimmers have been in place since the building opened in 1994 and had naturally come to the end of their life. The new installation of dimmers includes a new stage dimmer system, installation of new working lights and installation of house lights.

Rupert Horder Technical Manager says ‘Thanks to the funding  from Biffa Award the LBT has worked with Stage Electrics to complete the final phase of upgrade and replacement to the main house theatre lighting dimmers and house light dimming and control; something that could not have been achieved without the additional and ongoing support of the Friends of The LBT.'

Phase Two has seen the completion of the project with new dimmers added to the existing 120. Twelve of these new dimmers allow the auditorium house lights to be controlled by state-of-the-art touch-screens. This new versatility, coupled with LED flood lights (supplied to Stage Electrics by Bradford company BECS UK) which are used during the day when working on stage or for the housekeeping team to clean the auditorium have already seen a massive reduction in energy consumption. In one area alone consumption has dropped from over 2000 watts to 200 watts an hour.

60 dimmer circuits have been installed on and above the stage and along the sides of the auditorium. This will have a massive impact to all incoming companies, allowing them greater versatility and making the jobs of the resident technicians considerably easier.

With this support from Biffa Award  & The Friends we now have a lighting infrastructure in the main house that allows us to offer to visiting companies and local theatre users a vastly improved level of service that will last for many years to come.’

Karen O’Neill - Deputy Director says ‘The LBT is an incredible venue with big plans for the future. This funding will help us to continue to bring the best in local, national and international live performance to the people of Kirklees.  We are excited about the opportunity to move forward and make audience experiences even better with this new equipment as well as improving energy efficiency and lessen our environmental impact.

The bid was supported by The Friends of the Lawrence Batley Theatre who also provided a third party contribution. Lesley Baxter Chair of The Friends of the Lawrence Batley Theatre says ‘We are pleased to support improvements to the fabric of our lovely building.  This will enhance the theatre going experience for many years to come.’

Gillian French, Biffa Award Programme Manager, says 'The installation of a new dimmer system at The Lawrence Batley Theatre will be of great benefit to this important cultural facility for many years to come, and we’re pleased to support it.'

Thank you Friends of the Lawrence Batley Theatre...

Lesley BaxterThe LAWRENCE BATLEY THEATRE HUDDERSFIELD has had support for their dimmer system from the Friends of the Lawrence Batley Theatre who donated a £4897 match funding.

Now in use, Lesley Baxter, Chair of the Friends of the LBT, was shown by Rupert Horder, Technical Manager of the LBT, exactly what their kind match funding has contributed to.

Lesley says ‘The friends were very pleased to be able to contribute towards the dimmers and it’s been brilliant to be shown by Rupert how these operate. We are very lucky to have a theatre like this in Huddersfield.’

Rupert Horder Technical Manager says ‘Thanks to funding  the LBT has completed the final phase of upgrade and replacement to the main house theatre lighting dimmers and house light dimming and control; something that could not have been achieved without the additional and ongoing support of the Friends of the LBT.’
