Songs from the wood and other stories is an eclective retrospective of Morwenna Catt who is an internationally exhibiting artist / designer with a specialism in textiles & sculptural textiles, complemented by the work of Lucas Stephens, both artists living and working between the UK and Norway.

Morwenna...first exhibited with the Lawrence Batley Theatre way back in 1995 (22 years ago!) with her "x-ray series" becoming one our Event Exhibition for the Comedy Club, and a feature as part of transformation of the Foyer for that year's Christmas show "Wind in the Willows"

Her work often responds to literary and heritage themes.

Recent work includes "Sweethearts" a large scale textile installation about the way we remember and commemorate WWI.

She is currently working on a series of 'modern Shamanic' pieces based on folkloric tales and the threads of DNA that stitch our ancient past to the complexities of our modern lives, creating embroidered totemic creatures, gowns and headdresses.

Morwenna has developed a parallel freelance Art & Design career; managing, devising, consulting and leading arts projects and workshops in community and public settings as well as illustration, design and commissions.

She has worked on many large scale projects and events as both a Creative Director and as a hands on artist, designing and making extravagant costumes and big build structures for events and Theatre companies and creating props and scenic elements for private gatherings and functions.

Lucas... has a wide variety of work spanning over 25 years working as an Artist and Craftsman. He has exhibited Nationally and Internationally and has work in numerous public and private collections.

His early years growing up in an artistic family have contributed to his undogmatic approach to creativity and ever present spontaneity.

“I like the way Artworks change when you look at them deeply. For me it
is particular to Art that one can experience an unveiling of mystery
without ever being able to put into words what is revealed.”

Lucas studied at Cheltenham and Wimbledon Schools of Art and has lived in Norway since 1994. As well as studios on his little farm in Norway he has a shared studio in Thornton with his partner Morwenna Catt with whom he also collaborates making public Artworks.
