The Opera by Mark-Anthony Turnage based on the play by Steven Berkoff
Sung In English. Please Note: This performance contains Strong Language

Based on the play by Steven Berkoff, GREEK catapults us into the seedy, boozy East End world of Eddy and his family.

Fed up with his Mum and Dad and fuelled by anger against the world at large, Eddy ups sticks and roams the streets of London where he ends up picking a fight and killing a man.

Against this unlikely backdrop, Eddy meets the love of his life and in her finds contentment - until the day he discovers his true identity.

Then the **** really does hit the fan...

Mark-Anthony Turnage's brilliant and provocative opera exploded onto the stage in 1988. Inspired by Berkoff’s incendiary combination of poetry, physical theatre and knockabout humour, Turnage has created a contemporary classic: an opera fizzing with high voltage energy and raw emotion.

A stunning performance – it became more profound as the music progressed: By the end we were on the edge of our seats. The singers and orchestra were virtuosic.

WOW! Not expecting such an impact. Pre opera talk really put everything in perspective. Singing and orchestra both magnificent – I came to Buxton to be challenged. Well done.

Not at all what I expected but absolutely marvellous.

A brilliant and unforgettable evening. I commend the festival for programming a late-20th century work that challenges the audience as well as delighting us. Bravo indeed!

Just saw your production of Greek last night at Buxton. A wonderful performance - utterly convincing realisation and interpretation with wonderful singer/actors. Totally absorbing and compelling. Brilliant!

Going to Greek at the Buxton Festival was to be honest a bit of a ‘punt’, but in the event I was delighted with my choice. I found the pre-performance talk most illuminating and marvelled at Michael McCarthy’s eloquence and, indeed, enthusiasm. I had expected the music to be ‘challenging’, but was quite surprised by the beauty of much of it. The singers were all marvellous, notably Marcus Farnsworth, who managed to be both ‘dangerous’ and sympathetic. The on-stage ‘band’ was equally impressive.

Astonishing performance – I felt I was with the characters every step of the way, joy for joy, gut wrenching horror for horror. I must admit it took some time to get into the character of the work (but I suppose it is meant to be shocking!) but it came together very dramatically and effectively in the final Act.

Excellent in all respects. The simple production style worked very well for this opera.
